Overview The Experience

Ceylon Beach Holidays

Fitting Sri Lanka’s highland interior and Indian Ocean coastline into five days requires smart routing. Ceylon Beach Holidays is structured as a clockwise loop from Bandaranaike International Airport, climbing first through the central hills so you handle the active sightseeing early and save the warm southwest coast of Bentota for the end of your trip.

Over the first three days, temperatures drop noticeably as you move from sea level in Colombo to 500 meters in Kandy and nearly 1,900 meters in Nuwara Eliya. Along the way, you walk the courtyards of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, inspect 14th-century timber carvings at Embekke, and see how plucked leaf is withered, rolled, and graded inside a working highland tea factory. From the mountains, your private vehicle descends through rubber and coconut country to Bentota, trading cool mountain air for wide sandy beaches, a sheltered mangrove boat ride on the Madu River, and a community sea turtle conservation center at Kosgoda.

Because this schedule covers four overnight bases in five days, road time is steady—particularly the descent from Nuwara Eliya to the coast, which takes around five hours on winding roads. Travelers with extra days often add one or two additional nights in Bentota at the end for uninterrupted beach rest.

Itinerary Day-by-Day Plan

Day-by-Day Itinerary

A practical five-day schedule balancing highland sightseeing with coastal rest. Daily start times and stops can be adjusted with your private chauffeur-guide to match your flight arrival and pace.

Day 01 · Airport to Colombo Arrival in Sri Lanka & Colombo City Orientation

Your Saji Tours and Holidays chauffeur-guide greets you in the arrivals hall at Bandaranaike International Airport and drives south into Colombo via the expressway. Depending on your landing time and energy levels after the flight, you can check into your hotel first to freshen up or begin a relaxed driving and walking orientation through the capital’s historic and modern districts.

Your route passes the open stone pavilion of Independence Square, the shaded lawns of Viharamahadevi Park, and the National Museum exterior before heading toward Beira Lake to see Geoffrey Bawa’s floating Seema Malakaya meditation pavilion. Further north in Fort and Pettah, colonial-era administrative buildings stand beside the distinctive red-and-white striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque and the restored Dutch Hospital courtyard. Late afternoon is an ideal time to walk along Galle Face Green as coastal breezes pick up and local families fly kites beside the ocean, with optional time at One Galle Face or Colombo City Centre before dinner.

Approx. 45–60 mins transfer via Airport Expressway Overnight: Colombo
Day 02 · Colombo to Kandy Climb to the Last Royal Capital & Temple of the Tooth

After breakfast, check out and head inland along the Colombo–Kandy highway as flat lowland paddy fields give way to forested ridges around Kadugannawa Pass. En route, you can pause at a cultivated spice garden to see how cinnamon quills, cardamom pods, cloves, and black pepper grow on the vine and bark, with zero obligation to buy anything. Reaching Kandy by midday, stretch your legs along the palm-lined avenues, orchid house, and giant Javan fig trees of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, which borders the Mahaweli River just outside the city center.

In the afternoon, explore Kandy’s municipal market hall, gem lapidary displays, and traditional batik workshops if craft making interests you. Early evening centers on a cultural drumming performance followed by a visit to Sri Dalada Maligawa—the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic—during the evening puja ceremony, when ceremonial drummers fill the inner courtyard. Please wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and carry a pair of socks if you prefer not to walk barefoot on cool stone floors.

Approx. 3.5–4 hours drive (traffic dependent) Overnight: Kandy
Day 03 · Kandy to Nuwara Eliya Medieval Temple Architecture, Waterfalls & High Tea Estates

Following a brief morning stop at the upper Kandy Lake viewpoint, depart south into the rural hills outside Peradeniya to visit the three 14th-century shrines of the Gampola-era temple loop. At Embekke Devalaya, artisans carved hundreds of distinct wrestlers, dancers, and mythical beasts directly into ironwood pillars; nearby Lankatilaka and Gadaladeniya showcase brick image houses and South Indian stone masonry perched on quiet granite outcrops far from main tourist buses.

Rejoining the Ramboda Pass road, climb steadily past tiered vegetable farms and terraced tea slopes, pausing at Ramboda Waterfall before touring the Damro Labookellie Tea Centre. Inside the factory, staff walk you through the mechanical troughs, rollers, and dryers used to produce high-grown Ceylon black tea, followed by a freshly brewed cup overlooking the valley. Before checking into your hotel in Nuwara Eliya—where evening temperatures at 1,868 meters often drop to 12–15°C, making a light sweater useful—pay an afternoon visit to the cool-climate rose, fern, and camellia beds of Hakgala Botanical Garden.

Approx. 2.5–3.5 hours mountain drive plus sightseeing stops Overnight: Nuwara Eliya
Day 04 · Nuwara Eliya to Bentota Descent from the Central Highlands to the Southwest Coast

Enjoy a relaxed mountain breakfast before checking out for the drive down from the central highlands to the Indian Ocean shoreline at Bentota. The road winds down steep switchbacks out of the tea belt, passing pine plantations, rubber estates, and lowland river valleys where roadside stalls sell yellow king coconuts and seasonal rambutan or mangosteen. Your driver breaks up the journey with comfortable coffee and lunch stops along the route.

You reach Bentota by mid-afternoon, leaving the rest of the day completely unscheduled. Set on a long sandy spit between the Bentota River estuary and the sea, this stretch of coast is much quieter than urban beach towns closer to Colombo. During the southwest dry season from November through April, ocean swells generally ease, creating calmer conditions for swimming and long barefoot walks along the water’s edge before sunset.

Approx. 5–5.5 hours scenic descent to the coast Overnight: Bentota
Day 05 · Bentota to Airport Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation, Madu River Boat Ride & Departure

After breakfast along the coast, head ten minutes south to Kosgoda to visit a local sea turtle conservation center working alongside wildlife officers to protect vulnerable nests laid on nearby beaches and rehabilitate injured adult turtles that cannot survive in open water. Continue down the coast road to Ambalangoda or surrounding workshops, a town long known on the island for carving lightweight kaduru wood into painted Kolam dance and Raksha ceremonial masks.

Nearby at Balapitiya, board a private motorboat into the Madu River wetland, a wide brackish lagoon dotted with small wooded islands and tunnel-like mangrove channels. Watch for water monitors sunning on roots, brahminy kites overhead, and traditional prawn traps, with a stop on a family-run island plot to see how fresh Ceylon cinnamon bark is hand-peeled and dried. Afterward, return to your Bentota hotel to collect your bags and check out, then travel up the Southern Expressway to Bandaranaike International Airport in time for your departure check-in.

Approx. 2–2.5 hours transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport Overnight: Departure (No Overnight)

Tour Questions Answered

Practical details, packing recommendations, travel logistics, and personalized arrangements for this journey.

Is the ocean in Bentota safe for swimming year-round?

Sea conditions on the southwest coast follow Sri Lanka's monsoon cycle. From November through April, the sea in Bentota is generally calmer and well suited for swimming. Between May and October, the southwest monsoon brings stronger currents, rougher surf, and intermittent rain showers; hotel pools remain open and sightseeing operates normally, though ocean swimming is often restricted by red flags.

Can we add extra beach nights in Bentota at the end of this 5-day tour?

Yes. Because every Saji Tours and Holidays departure is private, many guests choose to add two or three extra nights at their Bentota beach resort after the highland driving days. Your airport transfer is simply moved to your final departure date.

What clothing is required for visiting the Temple of the Tooth and historic shrines?

All Buddhist and Hindu temples in Sri Lanka require visitors—both men and women—to cover their shoulders and knees (no sleeveless tops, shorts above the knee, or sheer beach wraps). Shoes and hats must be removed at temple entrances; bringing a clean pair of socks in your daypack is helpful for walking across stone courtyards.

What happens at Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, and is handling turtles permitted?

Kosgoda conservation centers protect sea turtle eggs relocated from vulnerable stretches of beach and care for permanently injured turtles. Responsible wildlife viewing means observing turtles in their tanks without lifting or touching them, as human handling stresses marine life and can transmit bacteria to hatchlings.
