Ceylon Tea Trails
Built around two-night stays in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Ella, this seven-day private highland route gives you time to walk tea ridges, hike Horton Plains at dawn, and ride the mountain railway across Sri Lanka's highest pass without one-night hotel changes.
Ceylon Tea Trails
Most week-long Sri Lanka itineraries rush through the central mountains in two nights, leaving barely enough time to look out a car window between hotel check-ins. Ceylon Tea Trails slows the pace deliberately by structuring the entire week around three consecutive two-night stays—in Kandy (500 m), Nuwara Eliya (1,868 m), and Ella (1,041 m)—so you unpack properly at each elevation and explore on foot rather than spending every day in transit.
Your week opens in Kandy with Peradeniya’s riverside botanical gardens and the evening ritual at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic before climbing past medieval wood-and-stone temples and Ramboda Falls into Nuwara Eliya. Two nights in the high tea belt allow both a factory tasting walkthrough and an early-morning trek across the cloud-forest plateau of Horton Plains National Park, followed by a relaxed afternoon around Victoria Park and Gregory Lake.
On Day 5, the route follows the historic British-built Main Line railway from Nanu Oya over Pattipola summit and down through eucalyptus forest into Ella, while your chauffeur-guide transports your heavy luggage ahead by road. Because Sri Lanka Railways releases reserved seats 30 days prior to travel and high-season demand is intense, seat reservations cannot be guaranteed in advance, though our operations team applies as soon as the booking window opens. Two nights in Ella then give you unhurried time for Little Adam’s Peak, the stone viaduct at Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Falls, and optional zip-lining before returning to Colombo for departure.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Six nights across three highland bases, combining gentle ridge hikes, tea heritage, and mountain rail travel with private road support.
Day 01 · Airport to Kandy
Arrival in Sri Lanka & Transfer to the Hill Capital of Kandy
Upon clearing customs at Bandaranaike International Airport, meet your Saji Tours and Holidays chauffeur-guide and set off inland toward the central foothills. Leaving the humid western coastal plain behind, the road winds upward past rubber groves, coconut estates, and steep rock cuttings along Kadugannawa Pass into the Kandy plateau.
Check into your hotel in Kandy during the afternoon and take time to rest after your international flight. If your arrival lands early in the day, your guide can take you for an easy late-afternoon walk beside Kandy Lake as fruit bats and egrets settle into the lakeside trees at dusk.
Day 02 · Kandy
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Local Crafts & Temple of the Tooth
Dedicate a full day to Sri Lanka’s last royal capital without packing bags. Start in the morning coolness at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, walking beneath double-coconut avenues, giant bamboo groves, spice trees, and glasshouses filled with tropical orchids along a loop of the Mahaweli River. Back in town, walk through the tiered stalls of the Kandy Municipal Market and, if gemstone cutting or textile dyeing interests you, visit a lapidary museum and traditional batik workshop.
As evening approaches, watch a traditional Kandyan drumming and dance performance before entering the palace courtyard of Sri Dalada Maligawa (the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic). Timed with the evening puja ceremony, your visit follows local worshippers carrying trays of frangipani and lotus flowers into the gilded inner shrine. Please dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.
Day 03 · Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
Gampola's 14th-Century Shrines, Ramboda Falls & Tea Processing
Pause at the upper Kandy Lake viewpoint after breakfast before turning onto rural lanes southwest of the city to explore Kandy’s 14th-century temple loop. These three quiet sanctuaries—Embekke with its carved ironwood pillars, Lankatilaka perched high on a granite crag, and stone-built Gadaladeniya—reveal how Sinhalese timber craft and South Indian stone architecture merged centuries before colonial rule.
Rejoining the Ramboda highway, climb steadily into cool mountain air past terraced vegetable plots and clipped tea estates. Stop to view the twin drops of Ramboda Waterfall before touring the Damro Labookellie Tea Factory, where you trace freshly plucked green leaf from withering troughs through rollers, oxidation rooms, and firing dryers before tasting high-grown tea overlooking the valley. Round off the afternoon among the cool-weather roses, oaks, and camellias of Hakgala Botanical Garden before checking into your Nuwara Eliya hotel.
Day 04 · Horton Plains & Nuwara Eliya
Dawn Trek on Horton Plains, Victoria Park & Gregory Lake
Depart around 5:30 AM with packed breakfasts for the high switchbacks up to Horton Plains National Park (2,100+ meters). Setting off along the 9-kilometer circular footpath soon after the 6:00 AM gate opening gives you the best chance—weather permitting—of reaching Mini World’s End and the 880-meter precipice of World’s End before mid-morning clouds roll up from the southern lowlands. Continue past the roaring spray of Baker’s Falls, keeping watch for sambar deer in the tussock grass and endemic highland birds in the stunted cloud-forest canopy.
Because you stay a second night in Nuwara Eliya rather than rushing onward, the afternoon unfolds at a gentle pace. After lunch and a rest back at your hotel, take an afternoon walk through central Victoria Park—well known among birdwatchers for Himalayan winter migrants—and finish the afternoon along the breezy shoreline of Gregory Lake.
Day 05 · Nanu Oya to Ella
Highland Train Ride into Uva Province, Little Adam's Peak & Nine Arch Bridge
After breakfast, drive fifteen minutes to Nanu Oya railway station to board the mountain train toward Ella, widely regarded as the most dramatic stretch of Sri Lanka’s 19th-century highland rail line. Your chauffeur-guide keeps all suitcases safely in your private vehicle and drives ahead to meet you on the platform at Ella station, leaving you free to travel with just a small daypack as the train climbs past cloud forests at Pattipola and curves along open mountain ledges into Uva Province. Note that Sri Lanka Railways opens reserved ticket allocations 30 days ahead and cannot be guaranteed; if reserved carriages sell out or rail services face disruption on your date, we arrange alternative carriage options or a slow scenic road transfer stopping at highland viewpoints along the way.
Arriving in Ella around midday, spend the cooler late afternoon walking the stepped tea-estate path up Little Adam’s Peak (about 45–60 minutes round-trip) for wide views out through Ella Gap, followed by a walk down through bamboo and tea slopes to inspect the 24-meter-high stone masonry of the colonial-era Nine Arch Bridge near Demodara.
Day 06 · Ella
Ravana Falls, Highland Trails & Optional Outdoor Adventure
Enjoy an unhurried breakfast overlooking the hills before spending a flexible full day exploring the valleys around Ella. Start down in Ella Pass at Ravana Falls, where water tumbles down tiered gneiss rock ledges right beside the Wellawaya mountain road, and—for travelers comfortable with steep steps—climb up through woodland paths to see the limestone cavern of Ravana Cave tucked into the cliffside above town.
Later in the morning or afternoon, active travelers can visit Flying Ravana Adventure Park on an estate ridge outside town, where optional ticketed activities include a 500-meter dual zip-line across the tea valley, abseiling, archery, or quad-biking. If you prefer a quieter afternoon, skip the adventure park in favor of a guided estate walk through surrounding villages or an unhurried afternoon reading with a pot of Uva highland tea before your second night in Ella.
Day 07 · Ella to Colombo / Airport
Return Descent from Uva Highlands to Colombo & Departure
Check out after breakfast for the drive from Ella back toward Colombo and Bandaranaike International Airport. Depending on road conditions and your flight time, your chauffeur-guide either descends south through Ella Gap to join the fast Southern Expressway toward Colombo and Katunayake, or takes the inland highland highway via Ratnapura or Kitulgala with lunch and coffee breaks en route. Because the transfer takes roughly five to six hours, evening or late-night flights work best on Day 7; if your flight departs in the morning, we recommend adding a pre-flight overnight stay in Colombo or Negombo.
Tour Questions Answered
Practical details, packing recommendations, travel logistics, and personalized arrangements for this journey.
Are reserved seats on the Nanu Oya to Ella train guaranteed?
No operator can honestly guarantee reserved train seats in advance. Sri Lanka Railways opens reserved ticket bookings exactly 30 days prior to travel, and seats on peak morning departures often sell out within minutes. Our team applies on release day to secure First, Second, or Observation class seats for you; if official railway allocations sell out or train services are disrupted, we offer alternative carriage options or a comfortable private drive along the scenic mountain road with photo stops.
What happens to our suitcases while we are on the train?
You do not need to carry heavy luggage onto the train. Your chauffeur-guide drops you directly at the Nanu Oya platform with your daypack, keeps your main bags locked safely inside your private air-conditioned vehicle, and meets you at Ella railway station when your train arrives.
What flight time works best for Day 7 departure?
Because driving from Ella to Bandaranaike International Airport takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, plus the standard 3-hour international check-in window, Day 7 works smoothly for flights departing after 6:00 PM. If your return flight leaves in the morning or early afternoon, we recommend adding one extra night in Colombo, Negombo, or along the south coast at the end of the tour.
Are activities at Flying Ravana Adventure Park included or optional?
Walking visits to Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arch Bridge, and Ravana Falls are part of your guided Day 5 and Day 6 itinerary, while zip-lining, abseiling, and quad-biking at Flying Ravana are optional activities so guests who prefer quiet hiking do not pay for adventure rides they will not use. Your guide can arrange tickets on-site or in advance upon request.
